What Can Your Mind Do? The Superpowers of The Human Brain

The mind is an amazing thing. Most people are unaware of what it is truly capable of. While studying to become a hypnotherapist, we read case studies and even saw videos of people undergoing surgery using no anesthetic at all. They used hypnosis instead. And it worked. The mind is capable of many extraordinary things if it is focused and disciplined.

Consider the case of Wim Hof, a 5o-something who has pushed the limits of cold all over the world and holds 20 guinness world records, including a world record for longest ice bath. He broke his own previous world record by staying immersed in ice for 1 hour, 13 minutes and 48 seconds. Hof also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest in shorts, broke records for swimming under ice water, he even ran a full marathon in the desert without drinking. Hof credits meditation for his “super powers,” describing his ability to withstand extreme cold temperatures by being able to “turn his own thermostat up” by using his mind. Hof got the test results regarding “The influence of concentration/meditation on autonomic nervous system activity and the innate immune response” case study, demonstrating that he is able to directly influence his own Autonomic Nervous System and Immune System. Hof seems to be able to raise his cortisol levels and lower the amount of cytokines (inflammatory mediators) just by using his meditation techniques. A different study on Hof while immersed in ice showed that Hof suppressed the cytokines by 100 percent. Wim Hof states that he doesn’t feel cold the way everyone else does because of meditation and that it has enhanced his immune system. He also states that he doesn’t suffer any negative effects from the extreme exposure to the cold that he endures. Amazing what can be done with a mind that is focused, trained and disciplined.

Hof’s story is not the only one of its kind. For centuries, there have been stories of people who can slow their own heartbeat, control pain and bleeding, regulate their own body temperatures or blood pressure, speed up their own metabolism and more, all with the power of their own minds. There are people with superhuman sightsuperhuman memoriessuperhuman reflexes and even X-ray vision. These things – coupled with what science has proven – prove that the only limitations we have are literally in our heads.
